What are Congenital Ear Anomalies?

Congenital ear anomalies refer to a range of ear malformations present at birth, affecting the ear's shape, size, or position. These can vary from minor asymmetries to more significant conditions like microtia, where the outer ear is underdeveloped.

While this diagnosis may initially cause concern for new parents, our practice is here to support you and your newborn with expertise and options for care.

Ear Molding Program

Ear molding is a non-invasive procedure that helps to correct anomalies of the outer helix/cartilage of the ear.

The molding process entails multiple weekly or bi-weekly appointments during which a malleable plastic splint is fitted under the helix of the ear and held in place with liquid adhesive, tape and molding material. In the weeks after your child’s ear molding appointment, the molds must be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until treatment is completed.

Time is of the essence in addressing congenital ear anomalies and beginning corrective treatment, if necessary. Ear anomalies are best addressed between 2-6 weeks of age, and the process is only successful if treatment is concluded before three months of age.

Cost of Treatment

If your child receives treatment for ear molding at our practice, the cost of service is $1,500 for one ear or $2,500 for both ears. Ear molding is a cosmetic service, and we cannot guarantee your insurance will cover the costs of ear molding procedures. The total cost of service is collected the same day as your child’s first ear molding session, as a standard practice for all patients.

We encourage patients to seek reimbursement from your insurance company for completed ear molding procedures, and we are happy to provide documentation for your case. Any procedure costs covered by your insurance and paid to Longwood Pediatrics will be reimbursed to you.

Ear Molding Consultations

Our practice also offers consultations for parents unsure about moving forward with ear molding treatment. The consultation fee is $250, which we automatically apply to the cost of service if your child moves forward with ear molding sessions. If your child does not proceed with ear molding treatment, this consultation fee is not refunded.

Once your newborn is established at Longwood Pediatrics, talk to your pediatrician about booking an ear molding consultation with our ear molding specialist.
